This beautiful antique edition of The Poetical Works of William Wordsworth was published by Gall and Inglis. The book itself is undated but there is an inscription inside dated 1866. So the book is from the earlier part of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in green cloth with elaborate gold gilt decoration blind stamped into the front board and spine. It's a really stunning example of the beauty of Victorian bookbinding. It's in good condition, but there is wear and splitting to the cloth at the corners and light bumping to the board edges. The boards show minor marks and there are some tiny holes to the bottom of the back board. The spine is faintly sunned and a split to the top of the external back hinge has been repaired with glue. Crushing to the spine ends has caused some more minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, the text block has undergone some restoration work and has been resewn and given new endpapers. There is a written inscription on one of the preliminary blank pages - this same page shows some minor insect damage in the form of small holes. The pages show age toning and foxing throughout with sporadic marking.
The book features a handful of beautiful black and white plates which add to the charm of this antique volume.
