This beautiful edition of The Poetical Works of Thomas Hood was published by Ward, Lock and Co Ltd. The book is undated but there is a written inscription inside dated 1894. So the book is from the late Victorian era.
The book is bound in brown cloth over bevelled boards, with stunning blind stamped decoration in black and gilt to the front board and spine. All edges are gilt. It is in good condition with the main flaw being the loss to the surface of the cloth covering the boards. It's just taken the surface colour off. The corners show light wear.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and the tissue guard for the frontispiece is detached. The pages are clean and bright with scattered foxing; there are occasional cracks to the gutter but the pages remain tightly bound. The book is features a handful of beautiful black and white illustration plates.
Dimensions approximately 19.2cm x 13cm x 3.4cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
