This lovely and scarce edition of The Chimes by Charles Dickens was published by Hodder and Stoughton. The book is undated but after some research, I believe it to have been published circa 1913.
The book is bound in red cloth with stunning blind stamped decoration in gilt to the front board and spine. It's a Christmas novel and the binding is wonderfully Christmassy to match! It's in remarkably good condition for it's age, with just some light wear to the corners and some minor marks and soiling to the cloth. The spine is sunned, with crushing to the spine ends. There is some sporadic foxing to the text block edges.
Inside, the endpapers are tanned and the pages show some foxing and marking. Sadly, as mentioned above, the frontispiece is missing but the remaining six plates are present and in good condition. The pages opposite the plates show significant tanning.
The illustrations are by the iconic illustrator Hugh Thomson, perhaps best known for illustrating Jane Austen's works.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
