This stunning vintage edition of The Pleasures of Bookland compiled by Joseph Shaylor was published by Truslove and Hanson Limited. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be early 20th century - circa 1910's-1920's. It includes wonderful quotes and passages on the pleasure of literature and the solace of books.
The book features a limp leather binding, with delicate gilt detailing. Limp leather bindings originated from the medieval era but they became popular again in the late Victorian period. The leather extends over the edge of the book block in what's known as a yapp binding. This makes it very easy for the leather to become damaged and torn around the edges.
The book is in very good condition with only minor marks to the leather and light wear to the edges. The spine is a little sunned.
Inside, the pages are clean and bright with only light age toning and occasional foxing. There are a few superficial cracks to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
