This beautiful antique edition of Popular Natural History and Characteristics of Animals by Captain Thomas Brown was published by James Blackwood. The book itself is undated but there is a written inscription inside dated 1886. So the book is from the latter part of the Victorian era.
The bound is bound in orange cloth over bevelled boards with pretty blind stamped decoration in gilt to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. It's in good condition but does show it's age. The spine is faded and crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. The boards are lightly marked and soiled, and the board edges are rubbed and lightly bumped. The corners show some wear and a few page segments stick out from the edge of the text block.
Inside, the pages show age toning and scattered foxing throughout. There is a name and date written on the verso of the front free endpaper and both hinges are cracked. There are also cracks to the gutter in places but no loose pages.
Dimensions approximately 17.1cm x 12.1cm x 3.1cm.
The book will arrive securely wrapped in bubble wrap, patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
