This lovely antique edition of Shirley by Currer Bell ( Charlotte Bronte ) was published by George Routledge and Sons. The book itself isn't dated but I'd estimate it to be from circa 1900. So the book is from the latter part of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in maroon cloth with gold gilt lettering to the front board, and detailing to the spine. It's in fair condition for it's age but is showing noticeable wear. The book has a forward lean and the corners are worn and crushed, with slight fraying to the cloth. The board edges are rubbed and the boards are marked, with some scuffing to the back board. The spine is sunned and crushing to the spine ends has caused splitting and loss to the cloth.
Inside, the hinges are cracked which makes the boards feel a little loose. There are no detached pages however. It appears that something has been removed from the front and back pastedowns (possibly library cards?) and the pages show age toning throughout. There is sporadic marking and foxing in places but this is minor. Some of the corners are folded in.
Dimensions approximately 19cm x 13cm x 2.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
