This stunning antique hardback edition of Scott's Poetical Works was published by William P Nimmo. The book itself is undated but William P Nimmo published under this particular name between 1857 and 1883, before changing to the name W.P Nimmo, Hay and Mitchell. So the book is mid Victorian.
The book is bound in brown cloth with blind stamped decoration and gilt detailing to the front board and spine. It's in good condition, but the corners are significantly worn, with the cloth split to reveal the board beneath. The boards have some marks and scuffs, and there is rubbing to the board edges and spine edges. The spine is slightly darkened, with crushing to the spine ends which has caused splitting to the cloth.
Inside, the front free endpaper and half title page have been removed, so the book opens onto the title page. The pages show tanning and light foxing/marking but are otherwise in good condition. There are cracks to the gutter in places but the pages are all tightly bound.
The book features a handful of striking black and white illustration plates which make it a really special book.
