This treasure of a book is a glimpse into a different time, being an accounting book from the Victorian era where someone kept a record of al their expenditure. It's fascinating looking through the book - it features bills for everyday items such as biscuits, candles and pencils, but also provides a glimpse at other types of expenditure such as petticoats and trips into London. The clasp and marbled text block edges imply that it was owned by someone with money.
It's in good condition but there is significant soiling to the cover and some small marks and bumps to the clasp. Someone has written on a label on the front board. There is some wear to the corners and slight dulling to the top edge of the text block.
Only a quarter of the pages are filled, but it's wonderful to peruse the lists of expenditures - the hand writing is exquisite. The pages that have been filled have holes near the edges (possibly where receipts were attached?). There is occasional foxing but the pages are remarkably clean and bright. There is a written name and date - I can't quite make out the surname of the inscription but it was owned by Eliza.
Dimensions approximately 19cm x 12cm x 2.7cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
