This beautiful antique edition of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was published by R.E King. The book itself is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1900.
***Please note that the book is missing both it's title page and page 11/12 so is being sold as a scarce decorative binding only***
The book is bound in green cloth with beautiful floral decoration and gilt blind stamped to the front and spine. It's the only edition I've seen in this binding before. They were produced quite cheaply at the end of the Victorian era as an affordable option for buyers. As such, they don't survive as well as other bindings.
Externally it's in good condition. The book has a forward lean and there is wear to the corners and board edges. The boards have some rubbing and marking and there is also rubbing to the spine edges. There is light wear to the spine, whilst crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. The gilt is rubbed and dulled.
Inside, the hinges have been reinforced with tape and the text block has been resewn. The first two pages (FFEP and half title page) have been repaired with Japanese tissue paper around the edges. Some of the pages have chipping and loss around the edges. There is heavy tanning to the pages throughout, with occasional minor marks and stains. A past reader has dog eared some pages which has left creasing behind.
Dimensions approximately 18.6cm x 13cm x 4cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
