This beautiful antique edition of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was published by Richard King. The book itself is undated but there is a written inscription inside dated 1908. So the book is likely to be Edwardian.
The book is bound in camel brown cloth over bevelled boards, with beautiful floral decoration to the front board and spine. It's a very striking binding and quite hard to find. It's in good condition, with the most noticeable flaw being the one inch split to the top of the front joint which has caused fraying in the cloth. The corners are worn and there is spotting to the text block edges. The boards show light marking and there is bumping to the board edges. The back board shows a faint scratch. There is some rubbing and minor loss to the pictorial decoration. The spine ands are crushed which has caused minor splitting in the cloth, and there is a dark mark near the tail of the spine.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and the endpapers are very tanned. There is a crack to the gutter between the half title page and frontispiece and there are other cracks to the gutter sporadically through the book. Some page segments feel a little loose but none are detached. The pages tanning, particularly around the edges, with occasional foxing. There is some damage to the bottom edge of page 11.
Dimensions approximately 20.5cm x 14.5cm x 6.3cm. It's a big, chunky book!
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
