This stunning little antique book features a selection of the Poems of Mrs Hemans It was published by Siegle, Hill and Co. The book is undated but there is an inscription dated 1918. So the book is from the early part of the 20th century.
The book features a limp leather binding, gold gilt lettering to the spine. Limp leather bindings originated from the medieval era but they became popular again in the late Victorian period. The leather extends over the edge of the book block in what's known as a yapp binding. This makes it very easy for the leather to become damaged and torn around the edges.
The book is in good condition for it's age but there is wear to the edges of the leather and soiling to the leather. The back cover shows a mark where a price label has been and the spine is sunned. There is minor splitting to the leather at the spine ends.
Inside, there is cracking to the gutter in places throughout the book and a neatly written inscription to the front free endpaper. The pages show age toning and minor marking.
Dimensions approximately 9.2cm x 6cm x 1.2cm.
The book will be hand wrapped in brown paper and string.
