This beautiful 19th century book contains Wise, Witty and Tender Sayings from the writing of George Eliot, collected by Alexander Main. It was published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1875 - so the book is from the mid Victorian era. It is a Second Edition.
The book is bound in green cloth over bevelled boards, with black and gilt decoration to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. It's in very good condition, with the most noticeable flaw being a small chip in the cloth covering the front board. The cloth shows minor marking and there is faint darkening to the spine. Crushing to the spine has caused minor splitting in the cloth, and the corners also show some wear and minor fraying.
Inside, the front hinge is slightly cracked but the pages remain tightly bound. There is light age toning throughout, with occasional foxing and creasing. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places and a personal library stamp to the half title page.
Dimensions of each volume approximately 17cm x 12cm x 3.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
