This beautiful antique edition of Mrs Heman's Poetical Works was published by Gall and Inglis. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be from the late Victorian era (circa 1880).
The book features elaborately decorated boards, with blind stamped decoration and gold gilt to the front board and spine. The boards are bevelled and the text block is gold gilt. The front board has an floral portrait of pink bells which is really striking.
The book is in remarkably good condition for it's age with the most noticeable flaw being the lifting to the author label on the spine. The boards show minor soiling and the corners are lightly rubbed. There is scuffing to the text block edges.
Inside, there is soiling to the endpapers and the pages show toning and foxing. Sadly the frontispiece has been removed which has damaged the title page (see photo).
The book features a handful of black and white illustration plates taken from engravings on steel. Each page also has a decorative border which makes it an extra special read.
Dimensions approximately 19.5cm x 14cm x 3.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
