This beautiful antique edition of The Garland or A Token of Friendship was advertised as a Christmas or New Year's Gift. It was published by Phillips, Sampson and Company in 1851. So the book is from the early Victorian era. It is fully bound in red leather, with ornate gilt decoration stamped to the boards and spine. All edges are gilt.
It's in very good condition, with just light wear to the corners and board edges, and some small chips to the leather in places. There is splitting to the top and bottom of the front hinge but the board is securely attached. The spine is sunned, whilst crushing to the spine ends has caused some minor loss to the leather.
Inside, there is a name written on the front free endpaper and there is significant age toning and foxing to the preliminary and end pages. The plates also show significant toning and foxing. The book features an illuminated title page. The rest of the pages are clean and bright with only occasional foxing.
The book features beautiful black and white plates which add to the charm of this antique volume.
