This lovely edition of Barabbas by Marie Corelli was published by Methuen and Co in 1896. It's the 21st edition. The book is bound in contemporary half Morocco leather with marbled paper boards. There are five raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine; the text block edges are marbled. The book was bound by Mudie, a company founded by Charles Edward Mudie in the 19th Century. - the Mudie's stamp is on the verso of the FFEP. Mudie's bindings were often high-quality, featuring materials like half-leather or full calfskin with decorative gilt work and are commonly found on books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
It's in very good condition but there is wear to the corners and spine edges, which has caused loss to the surface of the leather. The spine is lightly sunned and the top edge of the text block is dulled.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled - the Mudie bookbinder's stamp is on the verso of the FFEP and there is a penned name on the opposite page. The pages have light age toning and very occasional minor marking but are clean and bright.
