This stunning Second Edition of Popular British Ornithology by P.H.Gosse was published by Reeve and Co in 1853. It contains a Familiar and Technical Description of the Birds of the British Isles. The book is bound in original embossed black cloth with with gilt decoration to the front and spine. It's an attractive binding and in very good condition. There is subtle water staining to the front board and the boards show light marking and rubbing. There is crushing to the spine ends.
This wonderful antiquarian volume includes 19 hand coloured plates, each plate depicting multiple British birds. ***Please note that plate 14 is missing - there should be 20 plates***
Inside, pencilled writing has been rubbed out from the front free endpaper and there is a name and date in the top corner. The pages show age toning throughout with sporadic foxing. The top edge of the pastedowns and the edges of a few plates show faint water staining.
