This beautiful vintage edition of Silas Marner and Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot was published by William Blackwood and Sons. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1890/1900. The binding is not original but would have been a custom set for someone's library.
It is finely bound in half leather over pink cloth boards. The spine features two raised bands and gilt decoration in an art nouveau style. Top edge is gilt. It's in very good condition with just some wear and minor loss to the surface of the leather at the corners and spine ends. The boards show minor marks and scuffs, and there is faint water marking to the back board.
Inside, the book features beautiful marbled endpapers and there is a name plate glued to the front pastedown. The pages are clean and bright with minimal wear - the paper shows very light age toning.
Dimensions approximately 19.5cm x 13.5cm x 4.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
