This beautiful vintage edition of Essays and Leaves from A Note-Book by George Eliot was published by William Blackwood and Sons. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to be circa 1890/1900. The binding is not original but would have been a custom set for someone's library.
It is finely bound in full calf leather with gilt tooling to the boards and spine. The spine features five raised bands and leather title labels. There are initials blind stamped in gilt to the front board and the text block edges are marbled. It's in very good condition, with very light scuffing and bumping to the leather and rubbing to the corners. The spine is faded and the top edge of the text block is dulled.
Inside, the book features beautiful marbled endpapers and there are no inscriptions. The pages are clean and bright with only light age toning and very occasional foxing.
Dimensions approximately 17.8cm x 12cm x 3.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
