This beautiful edition of Personal Recollections by Charlotte Elizabeth was published by the American Tract Society. The book itself isn't dated but there is a name written inside dated 1854. So the book is from the mid 19th Century. Charlotte Elizabeth was a popular Victorian writer who is less well known with modern readers. She was a woman of strong mind and feeling who worked towards promoting women's rights. She faced health challenges including temporary blindness and permanent deafness, and (like many women of her day) had to endure an abusive husband.
The book is bound in green cloth with pretty embossed decoration to the boards and gilt flowers to the spine. It's in very good condition with just light rubbing to the boards and spine. The corners show light wear with bumping to the bottom corners. The text block edges are quite heavily foxed.
Inside, the pages show age toning, with very heavy foxing in places. There is a written name and date on the front free endpaper. Dimensions approximately 15.7cm x 10.5cm x 1.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
