This stunning edition of Holiday House by Catherine Sinclair was published by Blackie and Son. The book is undated but there is a written inscription dated 1903. So the book is either from the end of the Victorian era or the start of the Edwardian era.
Catherine Sinclair was a Scottish Novelist and children's writer, who departed from the moralising approach common in the Victorian era. She was first inspired to write by her nephew. Her writing even encapsulated a fantasy element, with fairies and giants featuring in some of her stories.
The book features a beautiful art nouveau binding, with stylised poppies to the front board and spine. It's in very good condition, with the most noticeable flaw being the sunning and marking to the spine. Crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. The boards show light soiling and there is a little wear to the corners. There is minor foxing to the text block edges and some faint fading to the front board.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and the endpapers are tanned. The pages show scattered foxing and light age toning throughout.
Dimensions approximately 18.6cm x 13.3cm x 2.5cm.
All books purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
