This beautiful First Edition of British Butterflies by A.M Stewart made up part of the Peeps at Nature series. It was published by Adam and Charles Black in 1914 and was the first edition of this popular work.
The book is bound in grey paper with floral decoration to the front and spine. The front also has a pasted on colour illustration. It's in good condition but there is splitting to the joints and pencil scribbles to the front illustration. The corners and board edges are worn and bumped, with some minor loss to the surface of the paper. There is sunning and darkening to the spine, and crushing to the spine ends. The back board shows light marking.
Inside, there is a written inscription to the front free endpaper and an old pencilled price to the front pastedown. The pages show light age toning and scattered foxing but the text is clear and bright.
The book features both stunning colour plates and black and white illustrations from photographs.
