This lovely antique edition of Cousin Phillis by Mrs Elizabeth Gaskell was published by G Bell and Sons in 1910. So the book is from the end of the Edwardian era. It's a popular edition with collectors because of the colour illustration plates by MV Wheelhouse. Cousin Phillis was one of Mrs Gaskell's short stories, but is a beautiful tale.
The book is in good condition with the most noticeable flaw being the loss to the white lettering and decoration on the spine. The spine is discoloured/sunned, and crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. The front board shows minor marks and there is shelf wear to the board edges and corners.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully illustrated and there is a name and date on the front pastedown. The pages show age toning throughout with very occasional foxing. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places, but the pages remain tightly bound.
The colour plates by MV Wheelhouse really bring this classic to life! They capture the characters and sense of village life well.
Dimensions approximately 18.2cm x 13.5cm x 2.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
