This beautiful edition of Chapters on Flowers by Charlotte Elizabeth was published by Seeley's in 1848. So the book is from the early Victorian era. This is when the Language of Flowers was becoming incredibly popular with Victorians. This book dedicates a chapter to each flower mentioned, with much more detail and history pertaining to each flower.
The book is bound in full Morocco with pretty blind stamped decoration and gilt to the boards and spine. All edges are gilt. It's in very good condition, with just some wear to the corners and board edges and minor loss to the surface of the leather. The spine is a little sunned, with two tiny chips to the leather. Please note that a couple of page segments stick out from the edge of the text block. When pushed in, the book doesn't properly close so I've left them as they are.
Inside, there is a written inscription on the front free endpaper and the pages show light toning and scattered foxing throughout. The paper is remarkably bright for it's age. As mentioned above, the text block is shaken and there are some loose page segments that stick out from the edge of the text block. There are cracks to the gutter throughout but all pages are still attached.
The book features beautiful black and white illustration plates which make it an extra special read. Dimensions approximately 17cm x 11.5cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
