This stunning First edition of Flowers From Shakespeare's Garden was published by Cassell and Company in 1906. So the book is from the mid Edwardian era. It is lushly illustrated by Walter Crane and is rare to find with it's original dust jacket.
The book features pictorial paper covered boards and a green cloth spine. It's in very good condition but there is wear and bumping to the board edges, as well as wear to the corners with the paper split to reveal the board beneath. The spine is faded and creased, and the circle on the front that would have been revealed by the cut out in the dust jacket is slightly darkened. The dust jacket has some loss to the spine ends and bottom corner of the back cover. It is tanned and marked, with wear and tear to the edges and a tear to the edge of the cut out circle on the front (if someone had not used clear plastic with a white paper backing (to protect the book from fading) you'd see the woman in the circle. There is some surface loss to the spine.
Inside, the pages show light age toning and sporadic foxing. The illustrations are printed on one side of double leaves folded once in the Japanese style (this means the pages are uncut but this is a design feature). The illustrations in this book really steal the show! Walter Crane has created a masterpiece with his illustrations.
Dimensions approximately 25.5cm x 19.5cm x 1cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
