This beautiful antique two volume edition of The Poetical Works of Robert Herrick was published by George Bell and Sons in 1900. So the books are from the very end of the Victorian era.
The books are finely bound in half Morcco with five raised bands to the spine and intricate gilt tooling. The boards are marbled and the text block edges are gilt. The books are in near fine condition for their age. There are minor marks and spotting to the boards, and discolouration to the front board of volume ii. The corners are worn, with some minor loss to the leather of the top corners which has just revealed the board peeking out beneath. The spines are slightly darkened, with wear to the spine ends.
Inside, the book the endpapers are beautifully marbled to compliment the boards. Both FFEP has A4(2) in red pen to the top corner. The pages show age toning and occasional foxing - the foxing is most prominent to the preliminary pages. The text is clear and bright.
Dimensions of each volume approximately 16.8cm x 11cm x 2.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
