This beautiful, antique edition of Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot was published in 1906 by Macmillan and Co. So the book is from the Edwardian era. It was part of the Cranford series by Macmillan.
The book is bound in teal cloth with elaborate gilt detailing to the front board and spine. It's a real beauty and is in very good condition externally. The book shows a slight forward lean. There is some wear and minor splitting to the cloth at the corners and the back board shows faint scratching. There is light soiling to the text block edges, and crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed and there is tape residue to the half title page and back endpaper. The pages show age toning and occasional creasing but are otherwise clean and bright. The tissue guard for the frontispiece is missing.
There are beautiful illustrations by Hugh Thomson - both in colour and in black and white. He was a very popular illustrator in the late Victorian era.
Dimensions approximately 18.7cm x 13.3cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
