This stunning antique edition of Evelina by Fanny Burney was published by Macmillan in 1903. It features illustrations by Hugh Thomson, who is one of my favourite illustrators. Perhaps most well known for illustrating some Austen works.
This sought after edition by Macmillan edition was part of the Cranford series. They have become quite iconic with their teal cloth binding and elaborate gilt decoration to the front board and spine. Frances Burney was an author writing before Jane Austen and her writing greatly inspired Ms Austen (the phrase Pride and Prejudice first appeared in Burney's Cecilia, years before Ms Austen wrote her world famous novel). Her witty writing style coupled with realism garnered a large following and her novels followed young ladies on their journey into society.
It's in good condition but there is rubbing and scuffing to the boards and light wear to the corners. The gilt on the spine is also rubbed and dulled, whilst crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is very slight cracking to the front hinge and a name plate glued to the front free endpaper. There are some superficial cracks to the gutter in places through the book - but the pages remain tight to the binding. The pages show heavy foxing throughout.
The beautiful black and white illustrations make this a real treasure of a book.
Dimensions approximately 18.7cm x 13.3cm x 3.3cm.
All books purchased will be hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I'm gradually switching over to eco-friendly packaging, including 100% recyclable jiffy bags :)
