This beautiful edition of The Little Flowers of St Francis was published in 1903 by JM Dent and Son. It features a wonderful full vellum binding with hand painted detail and metal clasps in the form of a cherub. It's an absolutely stunning binding that's unsigned. Several different bookbinding techniques have been used which is wonderful to see, including gauffering to the gilt top edge of the text block.
It's in very good condition, with some light soiling and marking to the vellum; there is some minor rubbing and loss to the hand painted decoration in places, and the spine is darkened.
Inside, the endpapers have a floral pattern, illuminated in gilt. The pages have age toning throughout, particularly to the preliminary and end pages. The page edges are rough cut which make the book feel ever older!
There is one black and white frontispiece.
Dimensions approximately 15.8cm x 10.8cm x 2.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
