This lovely but worn edition English Fairy Tales was Collected by Joseph Jacobs and published by David Nutt in 1911. It is the fourth edition (first edition published in 1890).
It's bound in red cloth with black pictorial decoration to the front and spine. As mentioned above, this book has been well loved. There is a forward lean and the corners are crushed - this has caused minor splitting in the cloth. There are some penned numbers to the front board and the back board is marked with some small splash marks. The spine is faded and crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, the front free endpaper has been removed and a name and address penned on the front pastedown has been partially covered with a white label. The verso of the half title page has been repaired with tape around the edges. This is an old repair and the tape has browned, causing offsetting on the opposite page. There are two names and an address in pen on the verso of the frontispiece. The pages show foxing throughout with sporadic handling marks. There are cracks to the gutter throughout but no loose pages.
The book features a handful of striking black and white illustrations by John Batten (both as plates and illustrations within the text) which make it an extra special read.
Dimensions approximately 21.5cm x 16cm x 2.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
