This stunning book is volume ii in what would originally have been a two volume set of Alton Locke by Charles Kingsley. It features a fine contemporary binding by the well known and respected binder Zaehnsdorf. A binder that is particularly sought after with collectors due to the quality and finesse of the bindings. It was published by Chapman and Hall in 1850.
It is bound in half Morocco with delicate gilt tooling and five raised bands to the spine. The delicate red petals on the flowers are particularly striking. Top edge gilt and marbled paper covered boards. It's in very good condition with light wear to the corners and board edges. The spine is faintly sunned, with rubbing to the spine ends.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and there is a name plate glued to the front pastedown. The pages show age toning and sporadic foxing, with occasional marks and fingermarks.
Dimensions approximately 20.3cm x 13.2cm x 2.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
