This stunning and scarce First Edition of Memoirs of a Mother in Law by George R Sims was published by George Newnes Ltd in 1892. It's bound in original blue pictorial cloth. The book is a satirical comedy of manners by British author and journalist George R. Sims. It was written from the perspective of an opinionated matriarch and the book humorously defends the much-maligned mother-in-law trope through social commentary on late-Victorian and Edwardian family dynamics.
It's in very good condition but does show a pronounced forward lean and there is light rubbing to the corners. There is minor marking to the cloth and crushing to the spine ends has caused very minor splitting in the cloth at the tail of the spine.
Inside, there is a stamped name and job title to both the front pastedown and front free endpaper. The free endpapers are tanned. The rest of the pages show light age toning and sporadic foxing. There are occasional cracks to the gutter but the pages remain tightly bound.
Dimensions approximately 19.3cm x 13.1cm x 2.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned paper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra strength.
