This rare and stunning first UK edition of Legends from River and Mountain by Carmen Sylva Queen of Romania and Alma Strettell was published in 1896 by George Allen. It's an absolute beauty, bound in original publishers cloth with a witch on her broom on the front board
It's in very good condition, but the corners are noticeably worn and crushed (the bottom corner of the front board is bumped). There is a faint cup mark to the front board and bumping to the edges of the back board. There is sunning to the spine and crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth; the spine edges are rubbed.
Inside, the endpapers are tabbed and there is a presentation plate glued to the front pastedown. There is also a small tear and chip to the top edge of the front pastedown and the hinges are slightly cracked - despite this, the pages remain tightly bound. The book is illustrated profusely by TH Robinson. There is light age toning to the pages throughout, with occasional foxing. There are occasional superficial cracks to the gutter in places - but as mentioned above, the pages remain tightly bound.
Dimensions approximately 21cm x 14.5cm x 3.5cm.
The book will be wrapped in bubble wrap, and gift wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon. This will then be securely packaged in a box with lots of eco friendly, biodegradable bubble wrap.
