This beautiful edition of Handy Andy A Tale of Irish Life by Samuel Lover was published by Macmillan and Co in 1896. The book is bound in blue cloth with elaborate gilt decoration of flowers and vines to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. The binding was designed by the iconic book designer AA Turbayne, and his signature scarab beetle can be seen on the front board.
This stunning edition is in very good condition with minor wear to the corners and spine ends. The back board has light scuffing and there is an area of bleaching to the cloth at the top of the back board. There is a little rubbing to the gilt at the bottom of the spine.
Inside, the endpapers feature the iconic yellow peacock. There is a penned name and date on the half title page. The pages are clean and bright with occasional foxing - foxing is most prominent to the preliminary and end pages.
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations by Henry M Brock.
Dimensions approximately 18.8cm x 13cm x 3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
