This stunning and rare antique edition of The King's Own by Captain Marryat features the beautiful AA Turbayne Binding. This extraordinary art nouveau design in gilt includes Turbayne's signature - a small AT initials above the shell on the front board.
It was published in 1896 by Macmillan and Co Ltd and features illustrations by Henry M Brock. The endpapers feature beautiful stylized peacocks. Albert Angus Turbayne created stunning book cover designs in the late 19th Century, towards the end of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in deep blue cloth elaborate gilt decoration to the front board and spine. The edges of the text block are all gilt.
It's in good condition but does have some condition points to be aware of. The corners are lightly worn and crushed and the boards show marking. The gilt is a little rubbed on the front and dulled on the spine, with a small white paint mark near the tail of the spine. The spine is faintly sunned and discoloured, with crushing to the spine ends that has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, the endpapers are age toned and there is a stamped address on both the front free endpaper and on the verso of the frontispiece. The pages show age toning throughout and sporadic foxing. There are occasional cracks to the gutter but the pages remain tightly bound.

The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
