This beautiful edition of Villette by Charlotte Bronte was published by Smith Elder and Co in 1891. So the book is from the late Victorian era. It is half bound in leather with marbled paper boards, but the book has undergone some restoration work in the form of a new leather spine.
Thanks to the restoration work, this book can be enjoyed and read for many years to come. The corners show wear and crushing, with the leather split to reveal the board beneath. There is wear and bumping to the board edges, with some peeling to the paper. The boards show scuffing and discolouration, and the new leather spine has been given three raised bands. The old leather is a little ragged and discoloured where it joins the new leather spine.
Inside, the pages show some foxing and age toning but the text is clear and bright. The endpapers are beautifully marbled and the internal hinges have been reinforced with tape.
Dimensions approximately 16cm x 11.2cm x 2.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
