This beautiful, antique edition of The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith was published in 1892 by Macmillan and Co. So the book is from the latter part of the Victorian era. It was part of the Cranford series - books bound in teal cloth, with elaborate gilt decoration. They've become popular with modern day collectors, in part because of Bookstagram.
The book is in good condition, but does show a slight forward lean and bumping to the corners. There is a little area of loss to the gilt on the front, and the spine is lightly rubbed and dulled. Crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth. There is minor marking to the boards and three small spots of what looks like dried glue to the back.
Inside, the pages show age toning and heavy foxing throughout. There are occasional cracks to the gutter but the pages remain tightly bound. Bumping to the top corner has caused folding/creasing to some pages. There are striking black and white illustrations by Hugh Thomson add to the charm of this Victorian book.
Dimensions approximately 18.5cm x 12.8cm x 2.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
