This lovely First Edition of The Three Brides by Charlotte Yonge was published by Macmillan and Co in 1876. It's bound in contemporary half calf, with five raised bands and leather title labels to the spines.
Charlotte Yonge was quite an incredible woman but not well known to modern readers. Her writings were admired by famous authors such as Lewis Carroll, CS Lewis, Anthony Trollope and Christina Rossetti. She was born into a religious family and her writings frequently reflected the values of Anglo-Catholicism. Yonge was herself sometimes referred to as "the novelist of the Oxford Movement" and she taught for 71 years at her local Sunday School. Her novels such as The Daisy Chain, The Young Stepmother, The Trial, and The Three Brides encompass Victorian problems of urban pollution, sanitary reform, and the frequent epidemics of diseases such as cholera and typhoid. She urged social, economic and medical reform of dirt-ridden Victorian cities.
They're in very good condition, but there is fading and marking to the spines. The leather shows scuffing and there is light wear to the corners. There is water staining to the top edges of the text block.
Inside, the pages show age toning, most noticeably to the margins, and there is occasional foxing and handling marks.
Dimensions of each volume approximately 18.5cm x 13.5cm x 3.2cm
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
