This beautiful antique edition of The Fairy-Land of Science by Arabella Buckley was published by Edward Stanford in 1880 - it's one of the scarcer, earlier editions, published just one year after the first edition. Arabella Buckley was an English writer and science educator. She was a particular champion of Darwinian evolution but focused more on the mind and morals, rather than competition and physical survival. She wrote multiple books for children, presenting scientific fact in a story book setting, much like a mother educating her children.
The book is bound in green cloth and feature stunning decoration blind stamped in gilt and black to the front board and spine. All edges gilt. Externally, it's in very good condition with just a slight forward lean to the book and light wear to the corners. The boards are still bright but there is some sunning to the spine and crushing to the spine ends.
Inside, a previous owner has inexpertly reinforced the hinges with glue. This makes them a bit stiff and you can just see the cracking to the hinges. The pages are clean and bright with occasional foxing and minor marking. There are also occasional cracks to the gutter but no loose pages.
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations throughout. Dimensions approximately 18.7cm x 13.3cm x 2.8cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
