This beautiful antique edition of Piccalilli An Illustrated Mixture by Gilbert Percy was published by Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington in 1862. It's bound in original blue cloth with blind stamped decoration in gilt to the front and gilt lettering to the spine. All edges gilt. The book illustrates the curious and cruel nature of the human species through a series of fables.
The book is in good condition but there is wear and crushing to the corners which has caused very slight fraying to the cloth. There is light wear to the board edges and boards, with some marking to the cloth. The spine is sunned and dulled, whilst crushing to the spine ends has caused minor splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is a penned inscription to the front pastedown and a rubbed out drawing to the front free endpaper. There is also some pencilled writing on the verso of the frontispiece and a pencilled word to the top of the title page. A further pencilled drawing is on the verso of the title page. The pages show age toning throughout with sporadic marking and foxing. There is some final pencilled writing and a drawing to the back free endpaper. The book has a handful of black and white illustrations within the text. Dimensions approximately 18.8cm x 14.3cm x 1.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string. The bubble wrap I use is 100% biodegradable and the jiffy bags are recyclable.
Where possible, I use 100% recyclable paper tape, but sometimes I have to use clear plastic tape for extra strength.
