This stunning Victorian edition of The Buried Cities of Campania; Pompeii and Herculaneum by W.H Davenport Adams was published by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1873. So the book is from the mid Victorian era. It's bound in original red cloth over bevelled boards, with blind stamped decoration in black and gilt to the front and spine.
It's in very good condition with light wear to the corners and minor bumping to the board edges. The board shows faint marking and the spine is lightly sunned. There is crushing to the spine ends. There is a bit of foxing to the text block edges.
Inside, there is a penned name and date to the front free endpaper and slight cracking to the front hinge. The pages are clean and bright with sporadic foxing. The book has both black and white plates and black and white illustrations within the text.
Dimensions approximately 18.3cm x 12.8cm x 2.3cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
