This stunning edition of The Ingoldsby Legends Myths and Marvels by Thomas Ingoldsby was published by Richard Bentley and Sons in 1874. So the book is from the mid Victorian era. It is full bound in Moroccan leather with gold gilt decoration blind stamped into the boards and spine. The text block edges are gold gilt and the spine features five raised bands. I think this will have been a custom binding for someone's personal library as opposed to the original publisher's binding.
The book is in good condition for it's age but the corners show some wear and crushing, with minor loss to the surface of the leather. The text block edges are scuffed and there is a very tiny chip to the surface of the leather covering the front board. The spine is lightly sunned and there is wear and chipping to the raised bands and spine ends.
Inside, the endpapers are marbled and there is a written inscription on one of the preliminary blank pages, alongside a penned name and date. There are also two newspaper clippings glued to a blank page (this has discoloured the opposite page). The pages show age toning and foxing throughout. There are beautiful black and white illustrations inside which add to the charm of this antique volume.
Dimensions approximately 24cm x 18.5cm x 4.5cm.
Each book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
