This stunning antique edition of Beauties of English Landscape by Birket Foster was published by George Routledge and Sons in 1874. So the book is from the mid Victorian era.
The book features is bound in brown cloth with elaborate gold gilt detailing and blind stamped decoration to the front board and spine. The boards are bevelled and the text block edges are gold gilt.
It's in remarkably good condition considering the book is 150 years old. The book shows a pronounced forward lean and there is wear and fraying to the corners, with splitting to the cloth. The boards show minor marking and rubbing and the spine slightly darkened. The spine edges are rubbed and crushing to the spine ends has caused splitting in the cloth.
Inside, there is cracking to the hinges, particularly to the front hinge which makes the front board feel loose. The pages feel tightly bound. The pages have age toning, foxing and marking throughout.
The book features beautiful black and white illustrations throughout that portray both English landscape but also a traditional way of life for those that lived in the countryside.
