This beautiful edition of The Young Englishwoman is A Volume of Pure Literature, New Fashions and Pretty Needlework Designs and was published by Ward, Lock and Co in 1868. So the book is mid Victorian. It's bound in half calf with marbled paper boards. It’s volume two in what would have been two editions published during 1868. It was a semi annual publication, between 1864 and 1877.
It's in good condition, but there is significant wear to the board edges and corners which has caused peeling and loss to the paper and leather. The boards are very rubbed and scuffed, with loss to the surface of the paper. The spine is faintly sunned, with chipping to the surface of the leather, particularly to the spine ends and edges. There is an ink stain to the top edge of the text block.
Inside, the front hinge is cracked but the pages remain tightly bound. There is age toning and scattered foxing throughout. There is a tear to the bottom edge of the title page.
There are stunning illustrations and needlework designs which really add to the charm of this antique book. The colour fashion plates are particularly striking and provide a wonderful insight into the Victorian era.
Dimensions approximately 22.8cm x 15.5cm x 4cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and ribbon.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
