This lovely antique edition of Modern Society or The March of Intellect by Catherine Sinclair was published by Simpkin Marshall and Co. The book is undated but I'd estimate it to have been published circa 1880/1890. It's bound in blue cloth with stunning blind stamped decoration to the boards and gilt detail to the spine.
Catherine Sinclair was a Scottish Novelist and children's writer, who departed from the moralising approach common in the Victorian era. She was first inspired to write by her nephew. Her writing even encapsulated a fantasy element, with fairies and giants featuring in some of her stories.
It's in good condition but the corners are worn and crushed and there is light shelf wear to the board edges. There is rubbing and light marking to the boards and the spine is sunned. The spine edges are rubbed and the spine ends are crushed.
Inside, all the pages before the title page have been removed and there is a bookseller's sticker in the top corner of the front pastedown. The pages show light age toning and sporadic foxing, and some of the page edges are a little rough as if they were separated by hand.
Dimensions approximately 18cm x 11.5cm x 2.7cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is oxo-degradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
