This stunning antique book of Thoughts on Personal Religion by Edward Meyrick Goulburn was published by Rivingtons in 1872. So the book is from the mid Victorian era. It's bound in full calf leather with marbled text block edges. The spine features five raised and delicate gilt tooling of two birds on a water bath, surrounded by stars and scrolling foliage.
The book is in good condition but shows wear to the corners and board edges. There is a bump to the fore-edge of the front board and the boards show some light marking and scuffing. There is rubbing to the spine ends and edges.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled and there is a bookseller's sticker to the top of the front pastedown. There is a penned inscription opposite the title page and a pencilled name and date on the previous page. The preliminary and end pages show heavy foxing but the rest of the pages have only sporadic foxing. There is a crack to the gutter just after the FFEP but the pages remain tightly bound.
The book measures approximately 17cm x 11.1cm x 2.2cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubble wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
