This stunning antique book of Sacred Allegories by the Rev William Adams was published by Rivingtons in 1856. So the book is from the early Victorian era.
The book is finely bound in full brown leather, with beautiful blind stamped decoration of foliage and berries to the boards. The title is surrounded by a gold gilt border which is incredibly striking! It may be showing it's age but it is no less lovely for this.
The corners and board edges are worn, with some loss to the surface of the leather. The gilt on the front is slightly dulled, and there is some light rubbing and marking to the boards. The spine is faded, and once again there is some wear and loss to the surface of the leather. There is also some loss to the leather at the spine ends.
Inside, the endpapers are beautifully marbled and there are no inscriptions. The pages show age toning and foxing, with sporadic marking in places but the text is clear and bright. There is superficial cracking to the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
There are pretty black and white illustrations throughout which add to the charm of this antique book. Each illustration has it's own blank tissue guard.
The book measures approximately 23cm x 17cm x 3.5cm.
The book will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
