I'm excited to offer a rare opportunity to purchase this beautiful early Victorian copy of Jane Eyre, published in 1850 by Smith Elder and Co. It's the fourth edition of this iconic work, published just three years after the first edition. Early editions of Charlotte Bronte's most popular novel are hard to find and this is the oldest edition of Jane Eyre I've ever been able to offer in my shop. It is written under her pen name Currer Bell and was published during Charlotte's lifetime.

It is bound in contemporary half calf over marbled paper boards. The spine features five raised bands and delicate gilt tooling. The howling wolf has been touched up with fresh gilt. It's in very good condition, but the leather does show some marking and discolouration, as well as scuffing. There is a small bit of leather missing from the head of the spine and another loose piece of leather sticking up. The corners have minor loss to the surface of the leather and there is wear to the board edges.
Inside, there is a name plate glued to the front pastedown. The pages show age toning throughout with sporadic foxing (this is most prominent to the preliminary pages).

I use a range of eco friendly, 100% recyclable jiffy bags and boxes, and whenever possible I use brown paper tape. The green bubbled wrap is biodegradable and the clear bubble wrap is 100% recyclable. I also reuse boxes when I feel it's appropriate (if the boxes are sturdy enough).
