This early Victorian two volume set of The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens was published in 1842 by Bernhard Tauchnitz. So the books were published in the very early Victorian era - just five years after the novel was first published. The books have been rebound in a faux black leather, but what's really lovely is that the original spines have been glued over the new spines. So you still have an original feature of the original cover. The text block edges are marbled.
Due to the new bindings, the books are in very good condition. There is minor shelf wear to the edges and the top edges of the text blocks are darkened. The original spines aren't complete and there is cracking to the leather - they're securely bound to the new spines though so they can be read easily.
Inside, there are neatly written names to the preliminary blank pages and the pages show age toning and sporadic foxing. The paper also shows faint creasing in places.
Dimensions of each volume approximately 15.7cm x 11.8cm x 2.1cm.
The books will arrive hand wrapped in patterned wallpaper and string.
