This lovely book of The Poetical Works of Thomas Campbell was published in 1837 by Oliver and Boyd. So the book is from the very end of the Georgian period. To put this in perspective, Charlotte Bronte would have been just 20 years old at the time of this book's publication.
The book is bound in full leather with pretty gilt decoration to the boards and spine. The text block edges are gilt. It's a really attractive little binding and quite ornate.
It's in remarkably good condition considering the book is almost 190 years old. There is wear and crushing to the corners with some loss to the leather. The boards show minor marks and scuffs, and there is light shelf wear to the board edges. The spine is worn and rubbed, with some chipping and loss to the surface of the leather in places. There is minor marking to the gilt text block edges.
Inside, there is a neatly written inscription in pencil to one of the preliminary blank pages. The pages light age toning but are in very good, antique condition. The frontispiece has left an impression on the title page. The binding is pulling at the gutter in places but the pages remain tightly bound.
