This lovely book of The Poetical Works of Robert Burns was published in 1840 by Scott, Webster and Geary. So the book is from the very start of the Victorian era.
The book is bound in full Morocco leather with pretty blind stamped decoration to the boards and gilt to the spine. The text block edges are gilt. It's a really attractive little binding and the gilt on the spine is beautifully intricate.
It's in remarkably good condition considering the book is 185 years old. There is wear and rubbing to the corners and board edges, with loss to the surface of the leather. There are minor marks and scuffs to the boards, and the spine is lightly sunned, with wear to the spine edges and ends. There is minor loss to the surface of the leather of the spine, and a small crack is starting to the top of the external front hinge.
Inside, the pages show light age toning and occasional foxing but are in good, antique condition. There is staining to the preliminary pages and sporadic cracks to the gutter in places - despite this, the pages remain tightly bound.
Dimensions approximately 13.8cm x 9cm x 3.2cm.
All books purchased will arrive hand wrapped in biodegradable bubble wrap, patterned wallpaper and string.
